Anton Szandor Lavey - The Satanic Bible
One might expect The Satanic Bible at least to offer a few prancing demons or a virgin sacrifice, but if you hopped this train expecting a tour of the house of horrors, you're on the wrong ride. Far from a manual for conquering the realms of earth, air, fire, and water, The Satanic Bible is Anton LaVey's manifesto of a new religion separate from the "traditional" Judeo-Christian definitions of Satanism. While LaVey rails against the deceit of the Christian church and white magicians, he busily weaves his own deceptions.
The Satanic Bible claims the heritage of a horde of evil deities--Bile', Dagon, Moloch, and Yao Tzin to name a few--but these ancient gods have no coherent connection between each other or to Satanism, except that all have been categorized by Christianity as "evil." Calling on these ancient names like a magician shouting, "Abracadabra," LaVey attempts to shatter the classical depiction of Satanism as a cult of black mass and child sacrifice. As the smoke clears, he leads us through a surprisingly logical argument in favor of a life focused on self-indulgence. The Satanic Bible is less bible and more philosophy (with a few rituals thrown in to keep us entertained), but this philosophy is the backbone of a religion that, until LaVey entered the scene, was merely a myth of the Christian church. It took LaVey, and The Satanic Bible, to turn this myth into a legitimate public religion. --Brian Patterson

George Percy Badger - An Inquiry into the Religious Tenets of the Yezeedees
This is a short extract from a book by a Christian missionary which gives some historical observations on the Yezidi people of northern Iraq. For more information on the Yezidi, refer to Devil Worship: The Sacred Books and Traditions of the Yezidiz, which references this article heavily.
The Rev. Badger didn't get as close to the Yezidi as Isya Joseph did. His access was limited because he was a missionary, rather than an anthropologist. However, there aren't too many first-hand accounts of the Yezidi during the mid-nineteenth century, (actually this is the only one I've discovered so far). This document gives another perspective on this fascinating culture and their unique religious beliefs.

Kenneth Grant - Against the Light
Against the Light is a rip-roaring arcane text, two-fisted occultism. Read as novel or as magic treatise, it will fail to satisfy, having neither the neat structure of fiction nor the compelling credibility of fact. Read as an incredible chimaeric hybrid of the two, and thus a striking comment on the strange interrelationship between them, it could conversely be seen as a bold, decadent masterpiece, a communiqué from reason’s furthest reaches, and beyond. It’s to be hoped that the response of the occult book-buying public is sufficient to encourage Starfire Publishing to release any subsequent “Nightside Narratives”, granting us further access to Grant’s logbook as he presses on with his safari into nightmare. Magic’s Mr Kurtz seeking his Heart of Darkness. As a bulletin from that internal, fictive dark, Against the Light reminds us that the shadow holds its own form of illumination. Highly recommended for those with an interest in the point where the extremes of magic meet the furthest, most precarious edge of fantasy and fiction. This is Hardcore.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kenneth Grant - The Magical Revival Kenneth Grant goes farther than almost anyone in describing real mystic and theosophical truths from a left hand path perspective. The book, which is a left hand path take on the philosophy of Aleister Crowley and the OTO, lays out more in its first two chapters than many books, even somewhat secretive books published by small presses and not known to the general public, do--and this book was printed by a major press and generally available in the early seventies. Goes into many things that are only hinted at in people's thinking about the meaning of various segments of Crowley's thought, from what the relationship of various entitites to the A .'. A.'. and to the Book of the Law is to what the OTO's conception of sex magic was in relation to Tantric Hinduism. More to the point, Grant integrates all of these systems together, so it's not so much OTO concepts being contrasted with Hindu concepts as common ground being found between the two and then a sort of dialogue being produced between them, both describing a common experience and goal. Grant is able to consistantly do this on a number of topics, which makes this book so valuable and interesting. Download:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allen Kardec - Collected Works on Spiritism Allan Kardec was a pseudonym of the French teacher and educator Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail who is known today as the systematizer of Spiritism. Born in France in 1804, Rivail was a teacher of physics, mathematics, astronomy and comparitive anatomy. He was already in his early fifties when he became interested in the wildly popular phenomenon of spirit-tapping. At the time, strange phenomena attributed to the action of spirits were reported in many parts in particular the US and France. The first such phenomena were at best frivolous and entertaining, featuring objects that moved or "tapped" under what was said to be spirit control. In some cases, this was alleged to be a type of communication: the supposed spirits answered questions by controlling the movements of objects so as to pick out letters to form words, or simply indicate "yes" or "no." Rivail became fascinated with the world of spirits and set about finding out if contact could be made between our world and their world. He wrote five major works which are; -The Gospel According to Spiritism -The Spirits Book -The Mediums Book -Heaven and Hell -Genesis Rivail (or Kardec as he is commonly called) has remained a major influence particularly in a form of Brazilian spiritism called Umbanda and has major influence in other forms of tribal-based spiritism such as Macumba and Candomble. These traditions are often lumped together and simply called Kardecism. I have uploaded his five major works in one file...

Begun in 1909, it remains one of the definitive works on occultism and magick, while several issues also contain poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies. Download:

Anton Szandor LaVey - The Satanic Rituals
As founding High Priest of the Church of Satan, Anton Szandor LaVey was one of the most remarkable voices in late 20th century religion, and "The Satanic Rituals" is a key text in his body of work. This volume, which is an ideal companion to LaVey's "Satanic Bible," makes available some rituals for practicing Satanists.
LaVey's rituals have an eclectic, even multicultural, flavor. According to him, the rites in this book have French, German, Russian, and Middle Eastern roots. He also includes rituals inspired by the fictional mythology created by H.P. Lovecraft, a writer of distinctive horror fiction. Although mostly geared towards group activities, many of the texts in this book could be adapted to solitary use.
The book is not without flaws and inconsistencies. Whereas some of the rituals appear in bilingual format, others contain untranslated foreign language elements. And although bibliographic references are scattered throughout the text, the book as a whole lacks a comprehensive bibliography. Also, some of the rituals seem a bit impractical. The introduction to the "elektrischen Vorspiele," for example, warns the practitioner of "the danger of serious injury or electrocution"!
Despite these drawbacks, this is an intriguing book. Both the rituals and the introductory essays are fascinating. LaVey even suggests appropriate musical accompaniment for these dark rituals. Rites in the book include a version of the legendary Black Mass, the Ceremony of the Stifling Air (inspired by the history of the Knights Templar), and Satanic baptismal rites (both child and adult). If you have a taste for the blasphemous, you'll want a copy of "The Satanic Rituals."

Robert Svoboda - Aghora: At the Left Hand of God
The Aghora trilogy have been embraced world-wide for their frankness in broaching subjects generally avoided and their facility for making the 'unseen' real. We enter the world of Vimalananda who teaches by story and living example.
This is an interesting book. It reminds me of Walt Whitman's line that its not the book but a piece of the man himself that you touch when you read it. The writing was very clear, accessible, and left me with the impression that I was in the actual presence of Vimalananda. I could smell him.
Having said that, this is the story of a Hindu shaman/sorcerer. Like a shaman he has powers, communes with spirits, is a healer and something of a joker too. Vimalanand has a great wit. And sometimes when he's in the middle of a serious story all I could think was, this guy's trying to pull my leg. You could almost see him winking at you in between the lines.
As an approach to God, this is not for me. It's a very dangerous path, physically, psychologically and spiritually. As a westerner, I just listened. I didn't get the urge to go out and try this stuff myself. There are enough warnings in the book to that effect as well.

Robert Svoboda - Aghora II: Kundalini
Book 2 of the trilogy explores the kundalini, the force of forces. Tantra, mantra, the sacred fire, chakras and consciousness. Written in the personable form of Vimalananda's storytelling and recounting of life's episodes we are able to truly enter the invisible realms.
We meet again Vimalananda, the Skotch-guzzling, chain-smoking, horse-racing, corpse-sitting tantrika of "Aghora: At The Left Hand of God" fame. Anyone remotely interested in tantra, yoga or Indian philosophy should read this book, if only for the marvelous allegorical interpretations of the Vedas and Vedangas that you may not find elsewhere. For example, Indra is the Lord of the Senses (Indrayi); and the esoteric Ramayana is a story of Hanuman/Prana's crossing the sea/chakras to the muladhara/Lanka where Sita/Kundalini lies captive, hostage to sense-deluded Ravana. Some stories are best taken with a pinch of salt--a pinch to make sure you're awake; salt to learn the alchemical lessons: for example, turning the sadhu's sandals to ash by mere touch (holy smoke!) or judging the jnana of a saint by the size of his feces (BS!). There is some question whether Vimalananda "really" existed or is only "imaginary" but, to me Vimalananda is as real and influential as Thrice-blessed Hermes, Hamlet, or don Juan de Mateo. Plus, the good doctor teaches how to raise shakti from Svadishthana to Anahata.

Robert Svoboda - Aghora III: The Law of Karma
In this third volume of the Aghora trilogy the Aghori Vimalananda uses the Bombay racetrack as a metaphor for the ultimate game of life.
Reading Aghora: The Law of Karma reminded me of how desperately the west needs a street wise yogi like Vimalananda-one who doesn't sugar coat things with New Age cliches or con their followers like so many gurus-gone-corrupt have, particularly in the USA. I enjoyed Vimalananda's sequeways from acute observations on horse racing to the esoteric dimensions of tantric yoga that rarely reach the light of day, particularly in the west. After reading this book, I further developed the ability to more accurately read the karma of people by looking at their auras-most useful in gaining a deeper understanding of what motivates people to do the things they do,. what fears, aversions they have, etc. I recommend this book along with the previous titles as well. Svobhoda was most fortunate to have crossed paths with this unusual yogi indeed.

Tantra Magick: An Amookos manual
The Arcane Magical Order of the Knights of Shambhala. An occult group founded in 1982 by Michael Magee (Lokanath Maharaj) by permission of HH Shri Gurudev Mahendranath (1911-1992) who was a guru (some say the last guru) of the Uttarakaula Tantric Order of northern India. AMOOKOS cleverly blended ancient Tantric and Western techniques and quickly grew all over the world, introducing people who would later become leaders in the occult community to Tantric philosophies and magickal techniques that were not widely known. As frequently happens, internal struggles led to a split in the group and today there are several groups that directly or indirectly owe a great deal to AMOOKOS.

Michael Bertiaux - The Voudon Gnostic Workbook
The Voudon Gnostic Workbook is a singular sacred work that is comprehensive in scope--from "how to be a lucky Hoodoo" to how magick and voodoo intersect energetically, to esoteric time travel. Complete with charts and graphs and instructive interdimensional physics, The Voudon Gnostic Workbook is an "object of desire" among students of the occult.
While The Voudon Gnostic Workbook has remained a controversial book considered important for masters of metaphysics, it recently came into popular culture and renewed popularity when Grant Morrison revealed it had been the inspiration for his cult comics The Invisibles, using the cribbed time travel from Bertiaux' s masterwork.
Voodoo is not an evil religion and is much misunderstood. It derives from the Dahomean Gods called the "Loa." Esoteric voodoo is actually a highly practical procedure for leading us into making contact with the deepest levels of our being and most ancient modes of consciousness. Michael Bertiaux's The Voudon Gnostic Workbook is the most comprehensive and illuminating contemporary book on the subject. Launched out of a correspondence course and series of classes for students and followers of Voudon Gnosticism and the OTO, this seminal text is at once one of the most mysterious and magnificent of all esoteric books.

Kenneth Grant - Nightside of Eden
Famed occultist Kenneth Grant continues his explorations of the left hand path in the compelling study that begins with the evolution of the Sephiroth of the Quabalistic Tree of Life. He delves into the almost unknown nightside of the tree ,finding evidence of extraterrestrial dimensions that, even now, stir our group unconscious in potentially dangerous ways. We must understand these powers, says Grant, for if they are not controlled, the violent disruptions which are already overtaking civilization will become pandemic.

Michael Bertiaux - A Course in Cosmic Meditation
Through a series of 12 lessons (chapters) Michael Bertiaux, in occult circles better known as Master Aquarius, leads you through a system of metaphysics, culminating in a series of simple meditation exercises designed to induce the lucid dreaming and contact with the inhabitants of the "inner worlds". It's simple, clear and enchanting... Meditation exercises are borrowed from the tradition of Tibetan Bon-po and can be a true door to inner worlds. Very interesting for those who want to study Bertiaux's occult system.

Kenneth Grant - Aleister Crowley and the Hidden God
In this study of Aleister Crowley's system of sexual magic, Kenneth Grant reveals the occult workings of the Fire Snake or Kundalini-Goddess the cosmic power that when awakened by magical means assumes the form that Crowley called the Scarlet Woman. Grant also describes a method of dream control that Crowley and others used to establish contact with extraterrestrial and non-human beings and to prepare themselves for the realization of true cosmic consciousness.

Kenneth Grant - Gamaliel: The Diary of a Vampire
The series of Nightside Narratives by Kenneth Grant continues with a further two tales, Gamaliel: The Diary of a Vampire and Dance, Doll, Dance! The first presents the history of a woman, Vilma, who attemps to invoke unseen Intelligences but takes a wrong turn. She loses her way in the Gamaliel, the Qliphoth of Yesod, and eventually succumbs to vampiric possession. Her story unfolds extracts from her Magical Diary, the editors of which makes a horrifying discovery as the Diary closes.
Dance, Doll, Dance! is an account of Tantric Sorcery. It centres upon the fatal emanations of an idol, bequeathed to the narrator of the tale. It becomes clear from a sinister patters of events that the idol thrives on blood and sexual rites. The narator is enmeshed in a nefarious web of intrigue and allure and his energies are vampirised, culminating in a cataclysmic sexual rite based on the Dakshina Kalika Yantra.

Kenneth Grant - Outside the Circles of Time
The fifth volume in the series of Grant’s Typhonian Trilogies, this is a work that covers an extremely wide area and exposes (to quote from the cover of the 1980 edition) "a network more complex than was ever imagined: a network not unlike H.P. Lovecraft’s dark vision of sinister forces lurking at the rim of the universe". The book is most famous, perhaps, for showcasing the work of Soror Andahadna, a contemporary Priestess of Maat whose work had parallels with that of Frater Achad many decades previously. Some Thelemites have problems with the Aeon of Maat. As far as they are concerned, each Aeon lasts 2,000 years; we are at the beginnings of the Aeon of Horus, so Maat is a way off yet. They may have little hesitation therefore in echoing Crowley’s famous retort to the young Grant when pressed: “Maat can wait!”. However, the following passage from Outside the Circles of Time puts the matter in a much more interesting light:
Myths and legends are of the past, but Maat should not be thought of in terms of past or future aeons. Maat is present now for those who, knowing the ‘sacred alignments’ and the ‘Gateway of Inbetweenness’, experience the Word ever coming, ever emaning, from the Mouth, in the ever new and ever present forms that are continually being generated from the mystical Atu or House of Maat, the Ma-atu...
But the book is about much more than the Aeon of Maat. It is a potent weaving of a host of apparently diverse strands into a single, broad and powerful current. Though Grant’s volumes in the series have each a unique flavour, Outside the Circles of Time seemed to herald a jump into a different dimension.
